‘Tough Guy’ Actor Setting His Sites on The US Senate
If you have ever seen the movies Predator or 48 Hours then you know who Sonny Landham is. He is the ‘tough guy’ who was the elite commando tracking expert in Predator and the villian “Billy Bear” in 48 Hours. He has been in countless movies other movies where he is best known for his imposing physique, strong voice and proud American Indian heritage. Though he admits his action days are behind him, Sonny Landham is now shooting for a new action role…US Senator.

Landham is going after the spot that current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell holds. But Senator Mitch McConnell is also no stranger to the tough guy role as he has shown his own political toughness on the Senate floor. Landham has often referred to Senator McConnell akin to “Boss Hogg” of the Dukes of Hazzard tv show implying that McConnell is a corrupt politician motivated by self interest and greed.
Sonny Landham knows that this is a longshot but he is very serious about his bid to become a US Senator to address his concerns that politicians are indifferent to the problems that face voters and the American people. He has even made comments against Democratic candidate and millionaire businessman Bruce Lunsford and even President Bush himself stating that Bush “took us into war on lies” and that the actual intent of the war was to “to put ‘Big Oil’ back into Iraq”.
As always, closets are flung wide open to reveal all the skeletons from the past. In the case for Sonny he does have a lot of them. But it is nice to see that he doesn’t try to deny them but rather accept them and move on. This is not to say he doesn’t have regrets, like making adult films in the 1970’s but he explains that was the choice he made to earning money and keep his actoring dream alive. Of course hindsight is 20/20 so he explains that if he knew that he would have 4 kids and run for US Senate, then he would not have made that choice. Landham’s remark, “What can I do? that was part of my life you cannot call back”
Whether or not this will hurt Sonny Landham’s chances at becoming Senator is still unknown. The Libertarian party that Landham belongs to don’t look at the Sonny that he was back in the past. They look at the man he is today following their philosophy of “live and let live”. Libertarian Party Chairman Ken Moellman states, “We look at the character of the man today, not what he did 30 years ago”.
To qualify for the upcoming November ballot, Sonny needs to gather at least 5,000 confirmed petition signatures by August 12.
